Mbuya Nehanda – Spirit of Resistance and Mother of Zimbabwe

Mbuya Nehanda occupies a unique place in Zimbabwean history and cultural memory. Revered as a powerful spirit medium of the ancestral spirit Nehanda, she became a central figure in the resistance against colonial occupation during the First Chimurenga (Zimbabwe's First War of Liberation) in 1896–1897.
Born into the Zezuru people, Mbuya Nehanda was regarded as a spiritual leader whose wisdom and guidance united communities during a time of profound upheaval. As colonial forces expanded into Zimbabwe, many local leaders and communities turned to her for strength, direction, and inspiration.
Following the uprising, Mbuya Nehanda was captured by British colonial authorities and executed in 1898. Before her death, she is famously believed to have declared:
"My bones shall rise again."
These words became a powerful symbol of hope and resistance, inspiring future generations during Zimbabwe's struggle for independence. More than seventy years later, her prophecy was associated with the liberation movements that eventually led to Zimbabwe's independence in 1980.
Today, Mbuya Nehanda remains a national icon whose legacy extends beyond politics and history. She represents courage, resilience, spiritual strength, cultural identity, and the importance of preserving ancestral wisdom. Her story continues to inspire artists, writers, historians, and communities both within Zimbabwe and around the world.
In contemporary art, Mbuya Nehanda is often portrayed as a symbol of empowerment, heritage, and the enduring connection between past and present generations. Through these artistic interpretations, her legacy continues to speak to universal themes of freedom, dignity, and human resilience.
